To get to know more moms in her children’s school and her synagogue, Marci Miller first had to stop working so much. And she wanted to spend more time with her 8- and 6-year-old so in 2008, Miller decided to retire from her marketing and public relations job at an entertainment PR firm. In order to get out of the house and get to know more moms, she began organizing small get-togethers to utilize free movie passes from her previous employer.

“If one other person will come, fine,” she says of the outings. She was just looking for other moms with whom to share activities.

They would go to the free movies and sometimes buy tickets if they didn’t have a free pass. Then she started acquiring passes to kids’ movies. “That really grew,” she says. “That has almost become more popular than the mom one.”

The small get-togethers evolved into Cinemoms, a movie and social club for moms. Miller has been organizing various free outings over the past 18 months and this past December, Cinemoms became a membership club.

For a $35 fee, club members are entitled to discounts at movie theaters, museums, jumpy places, furniture stores, paint-your-own pottery studios and more. Partners are located all around metro Atlanta. In addition, Cinemoms offers chances to win passes to city attractions, like the Atlanta History Center or the Fox Theatre.

“I only have 20 [partners] now, but my goal is to have 50,” Miller says. Current partners include the Alliance Theatre, Bean Head Toys, Atlanta History Center, Fernbank, Center for Puppetry Arts, HippoHopp, Movie Tavern, Young Chefs Academy and more.

Though the name of the group is Cinemoms, many of the Saturday morning children’s movies are filled with dads who bring their little ones. “It gives the mom a couple of hours and dad gets to spend some time with the kids,” Miller says.

The number of memberships are steadily increasing and Miller hopes the number can reach 2,000 in a year. She usually gets limited tickets to each event, but she stresses that not everyone can do everything because of scheduling conflicts. “So there’s something for everyone,” she says.

And she hopes to eventually sponsor weekly events. There are several events listed on the Cinemoms website, cinemoms.com, to win tickets for. “I’m trying to branch away from movies and do other stuff,” she says.

The events also coordinate with the seasons and holidays. Over the December holidays, Cinemoms featured a Winter Break Survival Guide with three weeks of deals to help parents get through the holiday break. During spring break, activities might be geared more for children out of school.

The card can be purchased on Cinemoms website and is valid for a year.
